First, we must understand what makes a student proficient in this area. A student is proficient if they: understand the purpose of agarose gel electrophoresis, the samples are loaded properly, the power supply is set with the correct voltage and time, and the staining on the gel after electrophoresis has produced distinct bands that can be analyzed.
Now that we know what makes a student proficient, we can begin to talk about where I have applied these skills. In the restriction digestion and analysis of the lambda DNA lab, we had to prepare an agarose gel, load the gel, set the voltage and time it according to the instructions. The bands came out beautifully.
